In this three-hour workshop you'll carve a pendant or ring from jeweller's wax, and we'll do the rest: casting it into sterling silver, hand finishing it in the studio, and posting it directly to you. Wax carving is how many professional jewellers bring their original designs to life, and it's far more accessible than it looks. The wax is forgiving, endlessly workable, and responds beautifully to everything from bold sculptural shapes to fine surface detail. There's no right answer — just your design, your hands, and three hours to see where it goes. It's a wonderfully different way to spend a morning or afternoon, and the finished piece — cast in solid sterling silver — arrives through your letterbox a little while later like a gift to yourself. Who is this workshop for? Open to complete beginners and anyone curious about the design side of jewellery making. If you've done silversmithing before and want to explore a completely different process, wax carving is a fascinating contrast — all about form and sculpture rather than metalwork at the bench. A good level of dexterity and close-up vision is helpful. Open to participants aged 16 and over; under-18s are welcome with an accompanying adult. What will you learn? Working with specialist jeweller's wax, you'll cover: - Shaping and carving using files, sandpaper and specialist wax tools - Creating surface texture and fine detail — by hand or by carefully melting the wax - Ring sizing on a wax mandrel *(if making a ring)* - Shaping and adding bails to pendants *(if making a pendant)* - Understanding how your carved design translates through the casting process into finished silver You'll leave with a finished wax piece ready for casting — and a solid understanding of how professional jewellers use this process to bring original designs to life.
