Fancy trying something new and discovering the joy of working with metal? This friendly, immersive week-long course is the perfect introduction to silversmithing. Starting with the fundamentals, you’ll be guided step-by-step through essential jewellery-making techniques, building skills and confidence as the week progresses. With plenty of hands-on practice time, you’ll really get to grips with each process and leave with a collection of beautiful pieces you’ve made yourself. By the end of the week, you’ll have a solid foundation in silversmithing — and quite possibly a new creative obsession! Who Is It For? Suitable for complete beginners and beyond. A good level of manual dexterity and eyesight is required due to the detailed nature of the work. Participants aged 16+ are welcome when accompanied by a responsible adult. What Will I Learn? You’ll work through a series of carefully planned projects designed to introduce key silversmithing techniques, including: * Saw piercing, drilling and precision filing * Annealing, soldering and basic heat-treating techniques * Using a rolling mill to texture metal and roll wire and sheet * Polishing and finishing methods * Making jump rings, chains and clasps * Doming and anticlastic raising * Riveting techniques * Making and sizing a ring band * Forming a bezel setting for a cabochon stone Each project builds on the last, helping you develop practical skills while creating wearable jewellery. What’s Included? All tools, equipment and materials are provided. We’ll begin by working in copper for two practice pieces before moving on to sterling silver for the final projects, including roll-printed earrings and a beautiful sterling silver bezel-set ring. Tea, coffee and biscuits are included. We break for an hour for lunch between 12.30 and 1.30 each day. What Should I Bring? * Reading glasses if you use them * Magnifying goggles if you have them * Closed-toe shoes * Long hair tied back * Avoid loose or flowing clothing Comfort and safety are important when working with tools and heat.
