Two-Day Sandcasting & Cuttlefish Casting Masterclass
Details
Join us for an exciting two-day masterclass exploring the magic of traditional sandcasting and cuttlefish casting — with the option to experiment with the wonderfully organic effects of water casting. You’ll learn how to create detailed impressions in sand and cuttlefish bone using master patterns, from simple hand-carved designs to tiny treasured objects. We’ll guide you through preparing your moulds for casting before pouring molten silver and enjoying the thrilling moment of reveal. Once cast, your pieces will be refined, transformed and finished into beautiful, wearable treasures to take home. Who Is It For? Suitable for beginners and beyond. A good level of manual dexterity and eyesight is required due to the detailed nature of the processes. Participants aged 16+ are welcome when accompanied by a responsible adult. What Will I Learn? • Traditional sandcasting techniques • Cuttlefish casting methods • Introduction to cast-in-place stone techniques • Master pattern making and mould preparation • Designing and cutting pouring funnels and air vents • Crucible preparation and safe rolling and pouring of molten silver • Soldering techniques to combine and construct your pieces • Finishing, refining and polishing your cast work By the end of the workshop, you’ll have a solid understanding of small-scale casting processes and several unique silver pieces of your own. What’s Included? The workshop fee includes full use of studio equipment and all casting materials. Please Note: Silver is not included and is available to purchase on the day at current market rates. You are very welcome to bring your own sterling silver to melt, provided it comes from: • A well-maintained scrap collection (free from mixed metals or solder contamination), or • Clearly hallmarked sterling silver. Please also bring along any small treasures or objects you may wish to use for creating impressions. Tea, coffee and biscuits are provided. We break for an hour each day between 12:30–1:30pm for lunch. What Should I Bring? • Reading glasses if you use them • Magnifying goggles (if you have them) • Closed-toe shoes (essential) • Long hair tied back • Avoid loose or flowing clothing Safety and comfort are key when working with molten metal.
